Brewing Guides

If you don’t have an espresso machine at home (and we don’t blame you if you don’t) there are many ways in which you can enjoy the perfect brew from the comfort of your home. The three brewing methods that we’ve outlined are simple, easy to follow and cost effective. But most importantly, they allow you to get the very best out of our special coffee. We also appreciate that everyone brews differently, and as such the following is intended as a guide. Please feel free to get creative!

Aeropress

Aeropress is our favourite way of brewing coffee at home. It’s super simple, clean and produces a great cup. Also, if you’re a traveller like many of the Bora team, you can pack your Aeropress easily in your case and enjoy Bora coffee on the road. Click here to see our Aeropress brewing method. We hope you find it easy to follow.

Aeropress Method

1. Boil your kettle and leave the water to sit for approx. 2mins. Pour some of the water into your mug to warm it.
2. Measure out between 15 – 17g of freshly roasted Bora coffee beans. If you don’t have a scale, fill the Aeorpress scoop (provided) and level it out.
3. Grind your coffee beans. We recommend a medium grind. All grinders vary so please check your settings.
4. Place a filter paper into the cap and screw onto the Aeropress chamber.
5. Empty the water from the mug and place the Aeropress chamber with the attached cap and filter paper onto the top of the mug.
6. Splash some boiled water onto the filter paper to wet it.
7. Add your freshly ground coffee to the bottom of the chamber, using the funnel provided.
8. Flatten the coffee at the bottom of the chamber. Then slowly pour the boiled water on top of the coffee (between 250g to 300g – or no higher than the No.4 on the Aeropress chamber).
9. Slowly stir the water and coffee with the stirrer provided for about ten seconds.
10. Carefully place the plunger on top of the chamber to seal and leave to stand for about 90 seconds.
11. Remove the plunger and stir for a further 10 seconds.
12. Place the plunger back into the chamber and slowly push down on the water and coffee until you hear a ‘hiss’ sound.
13. Remove the Aerporess from the top of your mug & enjoy your brew.
14. To dispose of the coffee grinds, simply twist the Aerporess cap and remover and then push the plunger. Recycle your grinds in the garden if you can!

Inverted Aeropress

For those of you wanting to get creative, you can always try the inverted Aeropress. Many swear by this method and believe the taste is greatly improved. The jury’s still out for us on whether it improves the taste, but we invite you to make your own mind up!

Inverted Aeropress Method

4. Add the tip of the plunger into the Aeropress and turn it upside down (hence inverted) and stand it up on a flat surface.
5. Place a filter paper into the cap and screw onto the Aeropress chamber and add a splash of water onto the paper.
6. Add your freshly ground coffee beans and level out. Slowly pour the boiled water on top of the coffee.
7. Stir the coffee using the stirrer provided for about 10 seconds.
8. Screw the cap onto the top of the chamber and let it steep for about 90 seconds.
9. Empty the water from the mug and place your mug upside down on top of the Aeropress.
10. Flip the whole apparatus upside down in one fluent motion – but be careful!
11. Slowly push down on the plunger as normal until you hear the hiss.
12. Remove the Aeropress from the top of your mug and enjoy your brew!
13. To dispose of the coffee grinds, simply twist the Aerporess cap and remover and then push the plunger. Recycle your grinds in the garden if you can!

Pour Over (V60)

Regulars at Bora HQ in Solihull know we’re passionate and serious about making pour over coffee and our team of talented baristas love getting creative (and competitive!) when trying to make the perfect brew. Here’s a guide to how you can make amazing pour over coffee at home:

Pour Over Method (V60)

1. Fold the filter paper along the seam and into a cone. Place the cone into your V60 and then place on top of your mug or glass jug.
2. Rinse the filter by pouring hot water through it and into the cup below. Empty the cup before continuing.
3. Measure out 15-17g of delicious Bora coffee beans and grind.
4. Freshly grind your coffee. We recommend a medium to fine grind for V60. All grinders vary so please check your settings.
5. Add your coffee to the V60 and flatten it out in the cone. The place your V60, coffee and mug onto a scale and equalise.
6. Start your timer. Add 80g of off the boil water, covering all of the coffee, which allows the coffee to bloom.
7. After 30 seconds, pour the water in concentric circles over the coffee. Avoid pouring the water directly onto the filter paper. Add approx. 100g of water.
8. Let the coffee sit for 20 seconds. Then add the remainder of the water (up to a maximum of 300g). Allow the drip to finish – this process should be done within 3 minutes.
9. Take the V60 from the top of the cup once the drip has finished. Enjoy your brew!
